Is it possible to have a job before Christmas?

Looking at my company’s track record over the last couple of years, more of my clients found jobs in December compared to any other month throughout the year. Just recently I got several emails from clients telling me that they got job offers from companies like Disney, Amazon, Google and Boeing.

Here are three reasons why December is the best month for job hunting:

Business accounting. Lots of employers are on a calendar year, which means that they close their accounting year at the end of this month. Budgets approved for 2011 many times don’t carry over to 2012 which means that they’ll have to fill their openings this month or they’ll risk losing the headcount for next year.

If companies have been wasting your time with interview after interview, they’ll have to stop and make a decision quickly. Also, if they don’t quickly find someone “stronger” or “more qualified” than you, they’ll probably make you an offer.

Easier accessibility. One of the fastest ways of getting a job, especially in Seattle, is through referrals. The problem most candidates experience is that the decision makers they are introduced to are unavailable or simply “too busy” to meet with them, except the month of December.

It seems as if our country shuts down during December. You can reach more recruiters, HR and hiring managers compared to any other time of the year. Use this to your advantage and try getting as many meetings as possible. My top clients set at least two to three meetings per day.

Less résumés. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, most jobseekers tend to go on a long break. They get too busy decorating their tree or looking for holiday discounts. This is your opportunity to stand out among the masses and get your résumé noticed.

Recruiters on average receive between 350 - 1,600 applications per opening. That number drops significantly during December so your application will probably be found around this time.

If you kick it into high gear you can give yourself and your family a nice holiday present. It my next column I’ll give you specific holiday job-search strategies you can use to get the most out of December; hopefully a job offer.
