VANCOUVER, Wash. - A Vancouver cheerleading coach has been charged with a sex crime and will face a judge Wednesday.

Neil Finger, the 28-year-old owner of Vancouver Cheer Academy on Northeast Minnehaha Street, was interviewed by detectives Tuesday night and then booked into the Clark County jail on two counts of first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor.

Police did not immediately release details explaining the allegations against Finger.

A sign on the door of his gym last night let cheerleaders and parents know that classes were canceled.

Finger talked to KATU News about four months ago when a friend of his, Beaverton-Tigard area cheerleading coach David Chatman, was arrested for alleged sexual contact with a 16-year-old. Finger said then that he hoped parents and other cheerleaders would continue to have faith in coaches who work hard to earn their trust.

"What I don't want people to think is that this is the norm, this is the rule," he said then. "This is definitely the exception."

Finger was also picked late last year to coordinate professional dance and cheer teams for the Vancouver Volcanoes International Basketball League. In a press release announcing his selection, Finger was described as growing the Vancouver Cheer Academy from 14 kids to 280 kids in 18 months. The release also stated that Finger worked with five area high schools, Portland State University and Clark College.

Following the news of Finger's arrest, the Vancouver Volcanoes on Wednesday fired Finger.
