Salem building owner told to shore up structure
SALEM, Ore. - A Salem building owner has until Monday night to start stabilizing a building's interior in order to prevent it from collapsing.

The large brick building located at 140 Front St. in Salem is a historic landmark and was built about 70 years ago.

A large crack in a wall was discovered last week.  A contractor is working on building condominiums next door to the currently vacant building.

Firefighters evacuated a nearby business and shut down part of the street after the crack was discovered. The street was reopened the next day and the lot was fenced off.

Officials say the cracks were probably caused by the earth moving from the nearby construction.

Dirt was piled up around the cracked area but engineers want a more permanent fix to stabilize the building.
