Vietnam War-era letters heading home after KATU News airs story

PORTLAND, Ore. - A man who found a bank bag full of letters from the Vietnam War-era was hoping someone could help him get them back home, and when KATU News aired the story, that is exactly what happened.

The letters, which were sent home by PFC Kenneth Phares, were found near a business in the Gateway District in northeast Portland.

Among the items in the bag were letters from the Marine while he was in basic training, postcards from the front lines and finally, a Western Union telegram informing his parents that he had been killed in action.

After KATU News ran a story Monday evening about the letters, a family member contacted us to claim them and we put them in touch with the man who found them.  They are planning to get together on Tuesday.
