PORTLAND, Ore. – In the race for Oregon governor, where did Republican candidate Chris Dudley live in the 1990s?

Portland's Willamette Week newspaper, a KATU print-news partner, is looking into the Republican candidate's past after campaign ads from Democratic rival John Kitzhaber claim Dudley has "never shown much interest in Oregon because [he] lived in Washington to avoid paying Oregon taxes.”

Dudley purchased a home in Camas, Wash., in 1994 when he played for Portland's Trail Blazers professional basketball team. He admits he did it to avoid paying state income taxes (which can take nearly 10 percent from Oregon paychecks). Washington residents, on the other hand, do not have to pay a state income tax.
