Police: Men used Craigslist to try extortion scheme
HILLSBORO, Ore. - Two men are being held in jail Thursday after they were accused of trying to extort money from a Hillsboro man using the personals section on the popular Web site Craigslist.
Police say it started when a 59-year-old married man responded to a posting on Craigslist for a romantic encounter with a woman.
The men who posted the bogus ad threatened to tell the man's wife if he didn't pay them $1,000.
Police set up a sting and arrested 21-year-old Andrew McIntyre of Salem. Another man, 21-year-old Nicholas Hayter of Dallas, is a suspect in the case.
McIntyre was charged with theft by extortion.
