HOOD RIVER, Ore. - Volunteers working to clean up Indian Creek in Hood River called in an air strike on Monday to help them clear out tons of garbage.

"It's interesting," said Sandra Hansell, who stopped to watch a helicopter pull debris from the creek.  "I wish they'd come to my house to clean the garbage up there."

Furniture and even cars were among the items that were airlifted out of the creek, which many have called an eyesore.

"Not just for visibility's sake, but also for the sake of the creek, it needs to be done.  There's just a lot of garbage, large garbage as you can see, that isn't easily removed by volunteers," said Jordan Kim with the Hood River Soil and Conservation District.

Calling in the helicopter seemed like the best way to help save the creek.

"Really, the helicopter is the best way to get it out because of the dense vegetation, muddy conditions and it is probably the least impact on the stream," said Kim.
