PORTLAND, Ore. - Snowy conditions in the Cascades Sunday prompted officials to require drivers to carry chains while heading on Highway 26 over Mount Hood.

Oregon Department of Transportation officials said motorists traveling in the area should be prepared for several inches of snowfall, freezing temperatures and brisk winds.

The news came as the National Weather Service issued a snow advisory Monday for the Cascade Range in the northern and mid-Willamette Valley, including Government Camp, Detroit, Santiam Pass, McKenzie Bridge, Oakridge and Willamette Pass.

The snow level was expected to drop between 2,000 and 2,500 feet on Monday with up to nine inches of accumulation.

According to KATU Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby, snow will fall in the Cascades on Monday. Once the system clears the area, dry, cool weather will take over for the rest of the week starting on Tuesday.

Police and ODOT officials are warning drivers to prepare for slick conditions by carrying tire chains or by using traction tires.

They also advise drivers heading over mountain passes to have a full tank of gas and food and water in their vehicle and to drive slowly in slick conditions.
