PORTLAND, Ore. - Snow and strong winds are on tap for the Northwest this weekend, along with some heavy rainfall that could possibly lead to some flooding problems early next week, according to KATU Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby. Here's a breakdown of the weather forecast each day.

Saturday

Snow

  • Increasing snow showers are expected in the northern Willamette Valley and southwest Washington in the afternoon - especially after 2 p.m. Expect a changeover to rain late Saturday - perhaps by 8 p.m. - everywhere but the Cascades, Willapa Hills and the Gorge.
  • Snow will be visible in most places but only sticking somewhere in the 300- to 500-foot range, with 1 to 4 inches of accumulation possible. Elevations above 1,000 feet will likely see amounts of 3 to 6 inches.
  • As much as 4 to 7 inches of snow could accumulate in the Gorge, especially east of Cascade Locks toward Hood River. Freezing rain is also possible there Saturday night as snow showers turn to rain.
  • To find out what elevation you are at, you can check out our Portland/Vancouver elevation map.
  • Ski resorts in the Oregon and Washington mountains should see significant increases in their base measurements and skiers who can reach the mountains should enjoy plenty of powder skiing. All mountain passes in the northern Cascades could see 10 to 18 inches of new snow by Sunday morning.

Sunday

Wind

  • Strong winds and heavy rain will hit the coast early Sunday with gusts up to 75 mph expected. However, the worst of the winds won't likely hit until late Sunday night to early Monday, when peak gusts could reach 90 mph to 100 mph there.
  • Portland and the valley could see wind gusts of up to 45 mph during the day and possibly a few stray 60 mph gusts from Sunday night into Monday morning.
  • The windy conditions are expected to last for a 30-hour stretch, from 10 a.m. on Sunday through 4 p.m. on Monday.
  • The strong winds would also reach the Cascades, making travel hazardous in the passes, which should see heavy snowfall.

Rain

  • A warm, moisture-rich storm system that is the remnant of two tropical cyclones moves onshore, raising the snow level back up to 2,500 feet.
  • Heavy rain is expected at lower elevations and heavy snow should fall in the mountains.
  • Coastal locations could get 3 to 4 inches of rain while 1 to 2 inches could fall in the Willamette Valley.

Monday and Tuesday

Flooding Concerns

  • Heavy rain is expected to douse the Northwest on Monday and Tuesday, which could lead to some flooding problems in the valley and along the coast.  Winds should calm down by Monday night.
