SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Department of Corrections is preparing for its first execution in 14 years as death row inmate Gary Haugen faces lethal injection on Dec. 6.
Officials gave reporters a look Friday at the execution room at the state penitentiary in Salem (see photos in the gallery).
Haugen was sentenced to death in 2007 for murdering his fellow inmate, David Polin. Polin was found with 84 stab wounds and a crushed skull. Haugen was originally in jail for murdering his former girlfriend’s mother.
If the execution goes through, it will be the first in Oregon in 14 years.
Death penalty opponents still hope to head off the execution.
