PORTLAND, Ore. - A suspected drunk driver is to blame for blocking west side MAX lines Saturday morning after driving his car into the Washington Park tunnel.

According to Mary Fetsch, a TriMet spokeswoman, the driver entered the tunnel's east entrance and stopped his late model Grand Prix just short of the Washington Park MAX station platform about 4:30 a.m., blocking the westbound MAX tracks.

Steven Stein, 54, of Vancouver, Wash., was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants, Fetsch said.

Buses shuttled riders between the Sunset Transit Center and the Library/Galleria stop for several hours as crews worked to get MAX service running again.

The car was removed by 9 a.m. and service through the tunnel was restored by 10:15 a.m., Fetsch said. TriMet estimated the cost of the disruption at up to $20,000.
