PORTLAND, Ore. - A fifth-grade boy manning the crosswalk near his school was struck by a car and injured Tuesday.

Police said the driver did not stop. No other students were hit. The boy suffered a broken toe and said his back is hurting as well.

The incident took place at North Denver Avenue and North Bryant Street outside the Chief Joseph Elementary School.

Bennie London III, 11, was on duty escorting students across the street in front of the school when he says a silver 4-door sedan went by, ran over his foot and spun him around, causing him to hit himself with his crossing guard flag pole.

London said the driver should have stopped to help him but instead kept on going. He said the driver was a female and that the silver sedan also had a rooftop cargo box.

The area where children cross the road is flanked by speed bumps and concrete dividers, as well as prominent markings on the pavement signs indicating it is a school crossing.

London said that after he got hit, he tried to contact adults inside the school using his portable two-way radio but got no answer.

School officials said they are investigating why the call from London was not received or responded to.

Typically, fourth and fifth-graders work unsupervised as crossing guards. Adult supervision is not mandatory.

However, following the incident, school administrators said an adult will be on duty Wednesday while the students cross the street.
