REDMOND, Wash. - A 30-year-old Kirkland man was killed early Friday when he veered off the road at speeds of more than 100 mph and crashed into a tree, police said.

Alcohol also is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, officers said.

Redmond police said the driver was traveling southbound on Avondale Road when he lost control of the white Cadillac CTS and swerved across three lanes into a wooded area. The posted speed limit on Avondale Road is 40 miles per hour.

The driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Firefighters had to cut the man out of the mangled wreck, and he died at the scene. His name has not been released.

During interviews, Redmond police learned that the driver consumed alcohol earlier in the evening. The exact cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner.

No one else was in the car and roads in the area were closed for several hours while police investigated.
