Cops swarm party that descended into melee

PORTLAND, Ore. - Police said a graduation party for Warner Pacific College students turned into a melee Saturday night after underage teens apparently crashed the party and fights broke out.

Organizers told police they rented a basketball court inside an industrial warehouse at 12245 N.E. Whitaker Way for the party and tried to provide security for the event but became overwhelmed after some people entered through side doors, police said.  The event was not sponsored by the college, which is located in southeast Portland.

Officers responded about 12:30 a.m. Sunday to a report of a loud party and saw people fighting both inside and outside the party, police said. Officers also saw numerous drunk people, including minors.

Some Warner Pacific students who e-mailed KATU said less than a dozen of the college's students attended the party and most, if not all, had left before things went awry.

After some partygoers became hostile toward police, supervisors called for all available officers to respond to the scene to try to break up fights and shut down the event. While some attendees left, others began throwing bottles and beer cans at officers, police said.

Officers used pepper spray while trying to get the crowd to leave. No one was seriously injured, police said.

Police arrested the following people:

  • Ramon Dimas-Ambriz, 20, for riot, disorderly conduct and fourth-degree attempted assault
  • Alonzo Dupree, 22, for riot, disorderly conduct and interfering with a police officer
  • Dominique Durisko-Caoile, 18, for disorderly conduct, interfering with a police officer, resisting arrest
  • Fred Marlow, 20, for disorderly conduct and interfering with a police officer
  • Walteron Coxeff, 20, for interfering with a police officer
  • Sheqouya Payton-Simmons, 17, for riot, disorderly conduct, interfering with a police officer and resisting arrest
  • Vincent Green, 19, for disorderly conduct and interfering with a police officer

College officials said Monday that neither the seven arrested nor the party organizers were Warner Pacific students.

The administration plans to investigate whether any of its students attended the party and "determine its response," according to Andrea Cook, the college's vice president for institutional advancement.

The college describes itself on its Web Site as an urban, Christ-centered liberal arts college in Portland.
