With the return of actual hot weather, state and local officials are warning people to remember basic safety tips: don't leave kids or pets in hot cars, don't drink while boating, and local rivers are extremely cold with swift currents due to the extraordinary snowpack built up over the winter. More safety information is below the 7-day forecast.

The warm temperatures could swell many rivers and streams as the snowpack at lower elevations melts under the hot sun.

And remember to stay hydrated with water, not soft drinks or alcohol.

It looks like Tuesday will be the first day the weather will really cool back down with a chance of light rain.

As the warm weather is upon us the Marion County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone of a few important safety tips.

Water temperatures of nearby lakes and rivers are still very cold due to recent cold temperatures and snow melt.

Persons who swim in cold water can succumb to cramps, early exhaustion, and hypothermia due to the water temperature. Water levels in rivers is still high which can result in hidden dangers and fast moving water.

Please remember that motor vehicle interiors can become extremely hot when parked with the windows rolled up in warm temperatures. Leaving children or pets unattended in parked vehicles can be deadly.

Ventilation of houses during hot weather is often necessary. It is recommended that houses be ventilated during night time and early morning hours with the house being totally secured when the resident is away. When ventilating a home windows and doors should be cracked open and secured (by wooden dowels, or chain locks) to prevent them from being opened up wider.

For more safety or crime prevention information please feel free to contact the Marion County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit at (503) 588-7981.
