Man with gun dies in SE Portland after police officers open fire
By KATU Web Staff
PORTLAND, Ore. - Police working in southeast Portland Thursday shot a man who later died. Whether the man died from bullets fired by police or by his own hand has not yet been determined.
Police said the man who was shot is wanted by the FBI and listed on several federal warrants, but no other details about the warrants or why the man was wanted were released. The shooting took place on Southeast Holgate Street and Southeast 128th Avenue at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday. It is the second fatal shooting involving a police officer in Portland in two days. No officers were hurt in either recent shooting. Officers closed Southeast Holgate Street between Southeast 122nd Avenue and 128 Avenue while SERT members assembled. The road remained closed for several hours. There were schools near the scene of the shooting but officials said they were not placed in lockdown or lockout status because police told them they knew the location of the suspect. The previous officer-involved shooting May 13 left a man dead after a woman called police to say she had witnessed a murder. Investigators later found a body in the home of the man that was shot by officers. An investigation into the shooting Thursday morning is under way.
