PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Bill and Chelsea Clinton shook hands and took pictures with surprised diners Sunday at the Mother's Bistro & Bar in downtown Portland, many of whom were on their way to a Barack Obama rally.

The former president and his daughter stopped by the restaurant for lunch during a break in their weekend swing through Oregon. They were campaigning in Oregon for Democratic contender Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The visit to the bistro came after the pair participated in an "I Have a Dream" Foundation service project at northeast Portland's Woodlawn Elementary, where they helped volunteers build a community garden.

Meanwhile, at the bistro, there was a 20-minute wait to get a table at the popular brunch spot, so several people were standing outside when the Clintons showed up. Camera phones came out and pedestrians crossed the street to get a better look.

"It's not every day you meet the president," said Eric Perkins, an undecided voter who was taking his wife out for her birthday.

In the restaurant, Bill Clinton stepped up to a woman and put his arm around her for a picture.

"Hi, I'm Bill," he said, extending his other hand.

As bystanders outside the restaurant jockeyed to take photos, restaurant owner Lisa Schroeder introduced the Clintons to her family and then led them into the dining room.

"You can walk around a bit and then we'll feed you," Schroeder said.

Chelsea Clinton smiled. "I like that," she said.
