VANCOUVER, Wash. - Two young girls who got separated from their family during a hike and spent a night in the woods were found safe Monday morning, authorities said.

The girls, ages 7 and 10, were described as tired but in good condition, according to a Clark County Sheriff's Office spokesman. They are from Vancouver, Wash.

The ordeal began after the girls, their father and their 15-year-old brother went hiking on the Tarbell Trail in eastern Clark County's Yacolt Burn State Forest Sunday. At some point, the girls fell behind the guys, and when the father, Gintaras Jonas Braciulis, turned around to look for them about 3 p.m., they were gone, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

The father and son, who searched in vain for the girls, eventually got to a location where the father could call 911 on a cell phone about 7:30 p.m. By that point, the father and son were lost as well, the sheriff's office said.

Meanwhile, the girls apparently hiked several miles through steep, rugged terrain and stopped for the night at Coyote Creek.

During the night, searchers in an aircraft were able to use a thermal imaging camera to find the father and son in a meadow about three miles south of the trailhead, the sheriff's office said.

As day broke, even more crews arrived to help in the search for the girls.

At about 10:30 a.m., Tyler Komm and Mike McClain of the Volcano Rescue Team heard the sound of the girls' voices yelling for help and found them about a mile west of where the trail crosses Coyote Creek, the sheriff's office said.

They were cold and scared but had sweatshirts, food and water with them. They told rescuers they had a hard time sleeping because animals were making so much noise.

After medics checked the girls and they were reunited with their brother, the pair jumped inside their father's car and headed for home.
