CANNON BEACH, Ore. – People are marveling over an infant harbor seal that appeared over the weekend near Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast.
Marine experts said this is the time of year when baby seals are born, and it is perfectly natural to see them alone.
Their mothers will often leave them on the beach while they feed and will come back to feed the infant when there aren't any people around.
"They're cool to look at, they're fascinating animals, but the best thing to do is leave them alone, so its mom can come back and take care of it," said Keith Chandler of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
Experts said beachgoers also need to make sure dogs are kept on leashes so the seal pup can stay safe.
The pup is relatively young; its umbilical cord was still attached Sunday.
