PORTLAND, Ore. - Rain is expected to hold off Wednesday afternoon for the annual Rose Festival Junior Parade in northeast Portland.
KATU Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby was on the scene as parade participants got ready to march and said she was hoping for some sunbreaks from an otherwise gray sky. Storm Tracker Doppler Radar did not show any incoming rain just after noon. The parade is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and winds through the Hollywood district, ending at Grant High School. On Wednesday morning, crews working with the city of Portland cleared away some tape marking off a spot along the route in accordance with new rules banning reserved spaces along the parade route. The area was not occupied at the time. Some people told KATU they thought the step was a bit draconian for a children's parade. City officials stressed that the rules applied to all parade events but also said they were not writing tickets for taping off spots this year. Violators can face a $100 fine. Northeast 57th Avenue, Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Northeast Tillamook Street will all be closed for the parade but will reopen later in the day after crews clean streets along the route. The Rose Festival Junior Parade is the largest and longest running parade for children in the U.S. Thousands of people and children are expected to take part again this year, with 10,000 kids alone in the parade. Rumor has it Portland Trail Blazer Greg Oden will appear in the parade. Other attractions will include marching bands, homemade floats, scout groups, clowns and lots of colorful costumes. |
