Hiker airlifted after cold night in the woods
By Associated Press
GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. (AP) - Clackamas County authorities say a missing hiker has been located and is now being examined.
On Sunday afternoon, Chad Tabler, 33, from northeast Portland, began hiking the Hunchback Mountain Trail on Mount Hood. Tabler contacted the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Sunday evening on his cell phone saying he was lost and in need of assistance. Search & Rescue coordinators established a command post at the Zig Zag Ranger Station on Mount Hood. Tabler was equipped with a cell phone but not much else. He had little water, no flashlight and was only wearing a T-Shirt, shorts and hiking boots. Tabler did have a light fleece jacket and was standing in snow when he called for help. He spent the night in the cold. Rescuers say Tabler is lucky they found him when they did. A cold, wet weather system is scheduled to bring snow to the 3,500 foot level on Monday. Tabler was reportedly suffering from mild hypothermia when he was found but was able to drive from the rescue staging area on his own. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
