June-uary weather continues
Cars arrive at the parking lot to Timberline Lodge Tuesday. By Jeff Jaeger and KATU Web StaffGOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. – Our descent into June-uary continued Tuesday as inches of snow piled up in the Cascades. While it was an unexpected gift for skiers, many cringed as yet another near-summer day turned dreary. According to KATU Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby, this is the third latest time it has snowed at Government Camp since officials started keeping records in 1951. The record was set in 1993, when it snowed in that area on June 23, she said. A few more inches of snow could fall in the Cascades before the snow level rises, Shelby said. Despite the snow, driving over the mountain passes did not appear too difficult Tuesday. Highway 26 through Government Camp was bare and wet with only some slush in places. Elsewhere in Oregon, plenty of the white stuff fell in the Blue Mountains. Interstate 84 between Pendleton and La Grande appeared to be a winter wonderland in some places. The big question on the minds of hikers and campers: When will it all melt? |
