PORTLAND, Ore. - The man at the center of a nationwide mortgage scheme has been charged with wire fraud, which could land him in federal prison for several years if he is convicted.

Jeremy Richardson is accused of bilking people out of their hard-earned money by coaxing them into buying homes in a 'lease to own' plan.

All of the victims say Richardson spent their money and they lost their homes when the mortgage payments weren't paid.

KATU spoke with Richardson by phone Wednesday afternoon. He refused to do an on camera interview but said he is cooperating with the investigation and has already signed a plea agreement on the wire fraud charge.

However, the U.S. Attorney has not confirmed that such an agreement was reached.
