SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say a Turner couple has been arrested on criminal neglect charges and their nine children taken into protective custody.

The parents were identified Friday as 41-year-old Robyn Drown and 48-year-old Graydon Drown.

Sheriff's deputies got allegations from a tipster and the state Department of Human Services.

The allegations involved both physical abuse and neglect. The department did not provide details.

The county sheriff's office says the children range in age from six weeks to 16 years.

Deputies took a search warrant Thursday to the Drown home in Turner south of Salem and arrested the two parents.

Neighbors said the family lived in the home for almost two years. DHS officials said they weren't aware of any problems and hadn't been called to the house before Thursday.

After checking out the home, DHS called the sheriff's office, opening up an investigation that would shake the neighborhood.

President Francine Shetterly of Temple Beth Sholom in South Salem says the large family stood out because of the members' traditional lifestyle and religious observance.

But she says the children were respectful, well behaved and seemed well-adjusted and happy.

Shetterly said the children received a home-school education and attended the temple's religious and Hebrew classes. Graydon Drown did handyman work at the temple.
