CANBY, Ore. -  A dangerous pitbull that mauled a 13-year-old girl in Canby over the weekend may have accidentally been returned to its owners.

Clackamas County officials were checking to see if they should have kept the dog in quarantine until a July 16 hearing to determine its fate.

The girl, 13-year-old Cheyenne Johnson, was riding her bike with her two sisters when she was attacked. The dog was being walked on a leash when the girl thought it was coming up for a sniff.

Instead, it sunk its teeth into her left calf, shook her back and forth and dragged her from the bike, her dad said.

The owners of the dog told the Canby Herald newspaper it was the girl's fault for getting bit.
