BEAVERTON, Ore. – A bullet from an assault rifle blasted through the ceiling of a Beaverton apartment Sunday, narrowly missing a man inside, police said.

Tim Wilson said he was sitting on his bed watching television and checking e-mail at his home at 12620 S.W. Colony Lane about 7 p.m. when he suddenly felt an explosion. A bullet came flying down from the upstairs apartment - about 16 inches from him.

"All of a sudden the ceiling exploded, and I'm like, 'What the hell was that?' " he said Monday. "I yelled to tell my mom and my dad, 'Get down and get cover.' "

"I don't think I ever have been that frightened in my life," said his mother, Christine Wilson.

Police said his neighbor, 29-year-old Cecil Webster Fairley, was showing off his AK-47 when it fired into the floor. The bullet shattered Wilson's ceiling and landed by his feet.

When officers arrived, they found the upstairs apartment empty; however, police later linked Fairley and another man to the incident.

Fairley was lodged in the Washington County jail on charges including being a felon in possession of a firearm, reckless endangering, failure to register as a sex offender, a parole violation and possession of marijuana and methamphetamine.

The other man, 26-year-old Chris Michael Brazelton, was cited and released for drug possession.
