OREGON CITY, Ore. - A crane on a barge clipped a power line on the Willamette River Wednesday, sparking brush fires and knocking out power to several thousand, authorities said.

It happened near Willamette Falls about 9:40 a.m. as employees of Wilsonville Concrete were working on the barge on a Portland General Electric-contracted project to clear debris from the river at the PGE Sullivan Plant.

Witnesses heard a couple of loud booms after the power line snapped. Brush fires started on both river banks.

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews quickly extinguished the fire on the Oregon City side while crews had a tougher time battling the fire on the steep terrain of the West Linn side, located off of Willamette Falls Drive.

About 2,500 West Linn customers lost power during the incident, though power was restored to all by noon, according to a PGE spokeswoman.
