SALEM, Ore. - Democratic senatorial candidate Jeff Merkley wants to debate incumbent Senator Gordon Smith eight times before the November election.

Merkley says he wants to hold a series of debates in October in Portland, Eugene, Forest Grove, Medford and Pendleton.
    
His campaign says he sent the proposal to Sen. Smith on Monday.
    
So far, Sen. Smith hasn't responded to the debate proposal.
