Two die, one escapes in train-car collision
An Amtrak train struck this car near Canby Friday night after the vehicle apparently stalled or became stuck on the train tracks, authorities said. By KATU Web StaffCANBY, Ore. - Authorities on Saturday said a car had apparently become stuck on railroad tracks before it was hit by a passing Amtrak train in Canby. Two men from Woodburn were inside the car at the time of the Friday night incident and were killed, according to Division Chief Troy Buzalsky, a spokesman for the Canby Fire District. They were identified Monday as 33-year-old Neptali Joel Ruiz-Contreras and 32-year-old Arnulfo Ezequel Garcia-Ruiz. A number of witnesses said the men were in a gold-colored Mitsubishi that had just left the Clackamas County Fairgrounds when it either stalled or became stuck on the tracks near the intersection of Northeast 4th Avenue and Highway 99E about 10:20 p.m. Friday, Buzalsky said. One person in the Mitsubishi got out of the car and tried in vain to push it free of the tracks before the train arrived. That person was able to narrowly escape just before the train hit the car while traveling at 70 mph, Buzalsky said. Two others were still inside the car when it was hit.
When firefighters arrived, the Mitsubishi and the nose of the train were on fire, Buzalsky said. There was concern about 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel in the engine possibly igniting as a result of the fire, and crews helped evacuate some 50 people from the train, he said. No one on the train was injured.
The evacuated occupants were eventually shuttled to Eugene, their final destination, Buzalsky said. The Clackamas County Crash Reconstruction and Forensic Team (CRAFT) Team is investigating the accident in cooperation with Union Pacific Railroad and Amtrak, he said. |
