Still hot today but relief is on the way
By Associated PressPORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon sweltered under the third-straight day of near-record-breaking heat on Saturday but forecasters said a cooling trend had begun. Weather forecasters had predicted high temperatures of 100 degrees or more across the state, except in the high Cascades and along the Oregon Coast. A couple of the hottest spots in the state on Saturday were Medford at 106 and The Dalles at 109. But temperatures fell just short of triple digits in Portland, where the high was 99 downtown and 98 at the international airport. If Portland had hit 103 degrees as predicted, it would have broken the record for the hottest three-day streak since July 19-21, 1994, when temperatures soared to 102, 103 and 101 respectively. It was 102 in Portland on Thursday, dropping to 100 on Friday. According to KATU Meteorologist Carlos Faura, Portland should hit the low 90s Sunday while the Gorge and eastern valleys could hit the triple digits for one last day. However, things will cool down during the work week, with temperatures only making it into the 70s in the western valleys - with a chance of showers all week, he said. |
