Klamath Falls man drowns in pond

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says a 32-year-old man drowned in a pond at an old gravel pit.

Russell Rumby of Klamath Falls died after becoming entangled in heavy vegetation. Divers recovered his body Sunday night.

Relatives told the Klamath Falls Herald and News that Rumby battled homelessness and drug addiction during his life, but heard he was doing better and had found an apartment.

Family and friends described Rumby as extremely intelligent. Always on the honor roll in school, he learned to play the piano by ear and as a teenager could answer most of the questions on "Jeopardy."

Beverly Leigh, a former Klamath-Lake Community Action Services case manager, said she will miss talking to Rumby about great books and arguing with him about philosophical ideas.
