Church's Porn and Pastries draws crowd of women
By KOMO Staff
BOTHELL, Wash. -- "Pornography" and "church" may be two words you'd never expect to hear in the same sentence.
But never say never. Porn took center stage at the Eastlake Community Church on Friday and held the attention of hundreds of women. "My boss, I told her, 'Oh, it's Porn and Pastries.' And she goes, 'Are you guys going to watch porn at church?'" said Sarah Nienaber. Not so. The women gathered to talk about pornography. "I would've never thought that we'd be talking about this," said Dana Brekke. At the head of the conversation was Craig Gross, founder of XXXChurch.com. The online ministry is devoted to getting Christians to talk about porn addictions. "This is an issue that we must pay attention to," he said. "Why can't the church lead this conversation? Why can't the church be a place you come to get help on some real topics?" The women heard from former sex industry insiders as well as former pornography addicts. The church's pastor said the congregation is not trying to march against it, but to simply have an honest conversation about it. "If this is hurting your life or your marriage, or your kids, hey, we'd love to be a resource," said Pastor Ryan Meeks. Porn in a church is an unlikely pair. But for many women, it worked. "I just want to be knowledgeable and I'm glad I'm getting information at church," said Brekke. "For it to have a safe place to come and talk and bring the shame level down is really good," Nienaber said. Friday's discussion kicked off church's Porn Weekend. The church will also host Porn and Pancakes for men, Porn and Parents and, finally, Porn Sunday. |
