Portland police make arrest in cold case

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland Police Bureau has made an arrest in a killing that happened 20 years ago.

Sgt. Brian Schmautz said 37-year-old Michael Garrett has been accused of murder in the stabbing death of Loretha Williams. The 30-year-old woman was found dead in her daughter's bedroom in northeast Portland on Sept. 27, 1988. The daughter was not home at the time.

Schmautz declined to say what evidence led police to Garrett. Investigators have said there was no sign of forced entry.

The bureau's cold case unit reopened the investigation several months ago. The woman's daughter, now 31, urged the public to provide information.

Relatives said Loretha Williams loved to sing and had started recording with a couple of musicians shortly before her death.
