Roof of Fred Meyer store partially collapses
PORTLAND, Ore. - A Portland department store was evacuated Saturday morning after part of the roof collapsed, likely from heavy snow and water. The collapse took place at about 7:00 a.m. The store was open at the time.
No one was reported injured in the collapse although workers were in the Gateway Fred Meyer store at the time. Firefighters said a section of the roof measuring about 30 feet by 30 feet failed.
The store is located at Northeast 102nd Avenue and Northeast Halsey Street.
Firefighters fear more of the roof could come down so the store remains evacuated. No timetable for a reopening has been released.
No damage estimate was been released and the specific cause of the collapse is under investigation.
The collapse comes after Portland received near-record snowfall over the past 10 days, followed by rain that soaked into the fallen snow.
