DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. - A Bend man was killed Saturday while snowmobiling when he struck a tree hanging over a trail, authorities said.

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office identified the man as 43-year-old John P. Garcia.

According to the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, Garcia was with a group snowmobiling near Elk Lake - located along the Cascades Lakes Highway southwest of Bend - when the wreck happened.

Members of his group called 911 about 7:30 p.m. to report the accident.

When crews arrived at the scene, they determined Garcia had suffered fatal injuries in the collision.

Investigators said neither alcohol nor excessive speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.
