New gas tax could spike to 6 cents per gallon
SALEM, Ore. - As Oregon lawmakers look for ways to plug the budget gap, it's looking likely that a proposed gas tax increase will be steeper than initially proposed.
Governor Kulongoski has proposed a 2 cent per gallon hike to help create transportation project jobs.
But the head of the House Transportation panel now says a heftier increase is likely, perhaps up to 6 cents per gallon.
Efforts to raise the state's current 24-cent-a-gallon tax have not been historically popular. Voters said no to a proposed 5 cent increase in the 2000 election.
