PORTLAND, Ore. - A Portland couple almost had to swim to shore when the boat they were on started sinking in the Columbia River during a test run.

The 38-foot boat, which was built in the 1960s, ended up partially submerged in the water Thursday afternoon.  The couple, Opal and Larry Dill, were able to safely get off the boat and crews then towed it up to the shoreline.

The Dills had just written a check for the boat, but the Yacht Spot plans to give them their money back.  The store allows a shakedown cruise to look for any problems and that is what the couple was on.

The boat is still sitting next to shore, submerged in the river.  A boat salvage company is planning to try to bring it back to the surface.
