Family, friends gather to remember 'amazing' teen killed in tragic crash
Unidentified mourners hug outside a memorial service for Lauren Olson. By Valerie Hurst, KATU NewsGRESHAM, Ore. - Friends and family of a Boring teen who died last week came together to remember her Thursday morning. KATU News talked to several people as they left the church following a nearly two-hour memorial service. Everyone seemed to use the same words to describe Olson: amazing, sweet, and smiling were heard time and again. It was quiet in the Mountainview Christian Church parking lot, even though it was packed with cars and people. It was clear that people in the community are going to miss Olson very much. One of Lauren Olson’s friends, Haily Jordan, said it was hard to know what to say in these situations, so she drew a picture of Olson instead. The framed image of a smiling Olson seemed to be a theme. “I just thought I’d do something for [Olson’s family] because there's not really much you can do in a situation like this, and I just wanted them to have something to remember her by,” Jordan said. She says finding a photo of the smiling Olson to copy was easy since Olson was always smiling. “Smiles in every [photo], she was an amazing girl,” Jordan said. “She was the sweetest girl and I’m gonna miss her every day,” she added. It was a terrible crash in the middle of the day that took Olson’s life. Investigators believe the young driver took a turn too quickly and lost control. Her passenger, Morgan Teeter, also 16, suffered serious injuries. Both girls were reportedly wearing seat belts. The girls were very close friends and were often together in photos Olson’s family gave to KATU News. Olson's family was touched by the crowd Thursday. “It just goes to show everyone loved her,” cousin Jesse Andersen said. “She's the sweetest, nicest girl you could meet “Just hearing all the things people have to say about her has been just amazing and it's been really great,” Laurena Mastne, another cousin, told KATU News. “It's really sad that she's gone, but we know she lived a really good life and we know wherever she is she's happy there and she deserves to be there,” Mastne said. KATU News spoke with Morgan Teeter's family at the hospital this week. Teeter is recovering but surgeons had to repair her aorta, a main artery in the heart, after it ruptured. Teeter was not able to attend the memorial. She is expected to eventually fully recover. |
