Robber: 'You scream, you yell, I slit your throat'
Julie Ackerman survived a horrifying home invasion robbery at her Happy Valley home Wednesday. By Jeff Jaeger KATU News and KATU.com StaffHAPPY VALLEY, Ore. - Two men forced their way into a Happy Valley woman's home, held a knife to her throat and robbed her in broad daylight Wednesday while she was babysitting a young child, authorities said. Now police are trying to track down the pair, who spoke with distinct Russian or Romanian accents and had been seen in the neighborhood before asking for money. The crime occurred about 11:15 a.m. at a home in the 14800 block of S.E. Natalya Street, according to Detective Jim Strovink, a Clackamas County Sheriff's Office spokesman. Julie Anne Ackerman told KATU she responded to a knock at the door and found two men asking if they could come inside to use the phone to call for help after their car broke down. When the 38-year-old woman told them she'd bring the phone out to them, they forced their way inside and one of them pushed her up against a wall in the hallway, she said. "(He) put the knife to my throat and said, 'You scream, you yell, I slit your throat,' " she said. "I mean I was definitely fearful for my life." He held her there while the other robber ransacked the house looking for valuables, including her $17,000 wedding ring, she said. During the roughly 10-minute ordeal, the robbers stole cash, credit cards, jewelry and two handguns, put them in a plastic shopping bag and fled, Strovink said. Neither the woman nor an infant she was watching were physically hurt. But she was very shaken up. Ackerman believes one of the robbers had come to her home last week begging for money to help someone he knew pay for insurance, Strovink said. Neighbors had earlier reported hearing the same story from at least two men going through the area with a similar story. The sheriff's office believes it was just a ruse. The sheriff's office released the following sketch of the suspects.
