HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. - A 22-year-old Portland man was arrested Thursday in connection with a robbery where two people forced their way into a woman's home and one of them held a knife to her throat while the other robbed her.

The home invasion robbery happened Wednesday at a home on Southeast Natalya Street in Happy Valley.

Julie Ackerman, 38, said she responded to a knock at the door and found two men asking if they could come inside to use the phone to call for help.  They said their car had broke down.  When Ackerman told the pair she would bring a phone to them, they forced their way inside and one of them pushed her up against a wall.

"(He) put the knife to my throat and said, 'You scream, you yell, I slit your throat," Ackerman said.

She said the man held her there while the other ransacked her home looking for valuables.  During the roughly 10-minute ordeal, the robbers stole cash, credit cards, jewelry and two handguns.

Later that same day, a man was knocking on people's doors in Fairview and asking for money to help a friend that was ill and lived down the street. One woman actually went to the home that the man referenced and determined there was no one there in need of assistance.  Police said she then drove the neighborhood until she saw the suspect's vehicle.  She took down the license plate number and then called police.

Officers later stopped that car in Portland and police determined the driver was who they had been looking for in connection with the Happy Valley robbery. Maksim Vasiliy Yevseyev, 22, was taken into custody and transported to the Clackamas County Jail, where he was charged with robbery in the first degree.  He was scheduled to be arraigned in court Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, investigators still need help from the public to identify a second suspect (pictured in the sketch).  Here is a description:

  • White male
  • 30 to 35 years old
  • Strong Russian or Romanian accent
  • 5 feet, 8 inches tall
  • Short, dirty-blond hair
  • Thin build
  • Clean cut in appearance
  • Wearing a white polo-style shirt with green horizontal stripes, blue jeans and white tennis shoes
