VANCOUVER, Wash. - An eighth grade boy died after collapsing while he was running during a physical education class at a Vancouver, Wash., middle school.

The incident happened Wednesday morning at Wy'east Middle School where students said they saw 13-year-old Quinn Driscoll collapse and fall on the track.

"My friend was running next to him and he just collapsed and hit his head on the side," said Corey Harper, a close friend.  "He was on the ground and he wasn't moving."

"I looked over and I saw him fall and I rushed over there," said Travis Rolf, another friend.

School staff performed CPR and called 911. When paramedics arrived, they took over but the boy died while en route to the hospital.

"I just broke down and started crying because I've been friends with him forever, since I can remember," said Harper.  "We've been close and our families have been close."

So far, there is no explanation to what caused the teen's death.  The medical examiner will need time to make a determination. Those who were jogging beside Driscoll said when he collapsed, he hit his head on concrete next to the track.

"If he would have tripped, then he probably would have broken his fall with his hands," said friend Travis Rolf.  "But he just collapsed."

Meanwhile, Driscoll's friends are paying their respects.

"He was like one of my best friends and I could trust him with anything and I just never expected him to leave," said Daniesha Cohen.

"We all love him and I love him," said Harper.  "He was just such a good inspiration in our lives and he always will be.  We'll always remember him."
