Huge cruise ship towers over waterfront

PORTLAND, Ore. - A gargantuan 12-deck cruise ship has docked on the Willamette River at Portland's Waterfront Park for a three-day stay that has many people talking.

The 644-foot-long ship, called The World, contains 165 privately owned residences, but there are still some you can rent - if you've got money to burn. A studio room will set you back more than $1,300 a night while a "luxury residence" can cost up to $4,700 a night.

Concierge Sascha W. Spei described living on the ship as "true class, style and elegance."

"A very warm welcome here," he said of his initial interactions with Portlanders. "The people seem very friendly so that is, for us, always the most important."

One resident told KATU the ship had recently made its way up the South American coast and had stopped in San Diego and San Francisco before heading to Portland. Spei said the ship will depart in the early morning hours on Friday, and it will stop in Astoria that day. It is expected to continue north and eventually reach Alaska in July.

Many walking along the Esplanade said they'd love to take a tour.

"It's fascinating," said Marie Riley. "I've seen it on The Travel Channel before, and the insides and how humongous it is. It's beautiful."
