PORTLAND, Ore. - As thousands flocked to Portland's waterfront for fireworks and blues Saturday evening, authorities recovered a body found floating in the Willamette River nearby.

A passing boater reported the body about 7 p.m., and crews recovered it near the Steel Bridge's grain elevator, according to Lt. Mary Lindstrand, a Multnomah County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.

Officials believe the body had been in the water for some time, and they could not immediately tell if it was a man or a woman.

No more information was immediately available.
