Neighbors rush to save elderly couple from fire
Hillsboro firefighters remove cellulose insulation to ensure there are no remaining embers in an attic fire on Southeast 35th Avenue Sunday. By KATU.com StaffHILLSBORO, Ore. - Neighbors were credited with rescuing an elderly couple - one of whom was confined to a wheelchair - after their Hillsboro home caught fire Sunday afternoon. Eric Ungar, 41, and Steve Sprecker, 38, helped pull 81-year-old Glenn Campbell and his 73-year-old wife, Maria, to safety with the help of off-duty Hillsboro Fire Chaplain Steve Brodehl, who was passing by at the time, according to Hillsboro fire officials. The couple was not hurt. When firefighters arrived shortly after 1:30 p.m., they found fire and heavy smoke pouring from the roof of the single story, wood-frame home on Southeast 35th Avenue, fire officials said. They were able to bring the fire under control in about five minutes. The damage was confined to a hallway bathroom and the attic, fire officials said. Investigators believe a faulty bathroom exhaust fan likely started the blaze. Because the fire and most of the smoke moved up from the ceiling fan, the residents were unaware of the fire until the neighbors came by to save them, fire officials said. The Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross helped the couple find temporary housing. If you or a family member have special needs, such as limited mobility or a loss of sight or hearing, fire officials ask you to ensure your fire escape plans include how to quickly evacuate your home should a fire occur. |
