PORTLAND, Ore. - Authorities have taken a 17-year-old into custody following a report of a student with a gun at Benson High School Friday.

Police traced the teen from the school to a northeast Portland Fred Meyer, where he was taken into custody. No gun was found on him, said Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a police spokesman.

No charges were initially filed against the student, who was not identified by police.

According to police, they received a report Friday that a student had shown another student a gun at the school. While police investigated, they locked in students at the school shortly before noon.

It was not clear what led them to the Fred Meyer at 66th and Glisan, where the teen was eventually found.

Witnesses said police waited outside the store for the 17-year-old to exit and then ordered him to the ground with guns drawn.

Though the incident moved away from the school, authorities were still controlling access to the building Friday afternoon.
