Both cyclist, driver intoxicated in collision

PORTLAND, Ore. - Investigators believe both a cyclist and the driver of a pickup truck were intoxicated when they collided early Thursday in northeast Portland.

The cyclist, Dawn Slawta, was reportedly in serious condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital Thursday morning.

The motorist, 44-year-old Mark Grover, was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants and was booked in the Multnomah County jail.

Police said both appeared to have blood-alcohol levels over the legal limit.

According to police, Slawta was riding her bike west on northeast Skidmore Street shortly after midnight when she failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with northeast 15th Avenue. Her bike then collided with the side of Grover's Ford Ranger pickup.

Police said Grover remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Investigators believe alcohol consumption played a role in the crash. Other factors included the fact that Slawta was not wearing a helmet or riding with a bike light and was wearing dark clothing, police said.
