CORNELIUS, Ore. - The normally quiet neighborhood around Steamboat Park turned into the scene of a homicide when a body was discovered in the park Friday night.

This is the first homicide in years in the small town of Cornelius, which lies just east of Forest Grove. And it's a crime that has neighbors here looking over their shoulders.

"It's just scary, and real sad somebody had to die," said one neighbor.

Their streets were cordoned off with crime tape through Saturday as investigators pieced together what happened.

After 18-plus hours collecting evidence, Cornelius police arrested two suspects that they said were "linked to the death." One is an adult male, now booked in Washington County jail, and the other is a juvenile in juvenile custody.

One of those suspects was brought back to the scene to help investigators. 

An inside source tells KATU that he believes the two arrested are the individuals responsible. The source also tells KATU that it is believed that these are most likely the only ones involved in this death. We're told the death was not gang related, and that the victim knew the suspects.

Neighbors are glad the men are behind bars. However, they fear this won't be the last of criminal activity in Steamboat Park.

"This used to be really nice neighborhood," said one neighbor, who said she grew up here in Cornelius.

Until they learn more, they will be protecting themselves - just in case.

"I bring a flashlight with me," said one, "but I have a pitch fork close by."
