Mandatory closures at some state offices Friday
OREGON - If you have business to do with one of Oregon's many state agencies, you might want to try to get it done Thursday.
That's because Friday is the first of 10 state furlough days.
The state anticipates it will save around $2 million to $2.5 million each day - just in payroll - with this move to require unpaid time off.
It's the first of 10 closure days scheduled over the next two years. That means you will not find anyone at the DMV, employment offices, human services ... not even anyone doing testing at the DEQ.
But not all workers are off. State police and corrections officers are working, as are state courts, highway hazard crew and anyone critical to safety. Those workers will have to take an unpaid day off later, or take a pay cut.
"It's something we've know was coming for a while," said William Knight, a worker at the Oregon DEQ. "So a lot of folks have taken steps to tighten the belt a little bit, save a little bit more money to be prepared for the loss of income that they'll incur during furlough."
The next furlough day will be Nov. 27.
A spokesperson at the state tells KATU that most of its state's managers throughout Oregon are being asked to take even more than 10 days of furlough. We're told that they are being asked to take another four days off as well.
Oregon is not the only state requiring these unpaid days off. Nearly half of the states are doing this to save tax dollars.
