On October 22, 2009, at about 2:00 p.m., Albany Police Detectives, acting on a tip, took 19-year-old Albany transient Bill Lee Diaz into custody at gunpoint outside of the Albany Motel 6 located on Southeast Pacific Boulevard.

Albany Police Detectives interviewed Bill Diaz and later lodged him in the Linn County Jail on the following charges:

  • Robbery in the First Degree
  • Conspiracy to Commit Robbery in the First Degree

Bill Diaz was wanted in connection with the armed robbery that took place on October 14, 2009, at AJ's Haus, a local tavern/lottery retailer, located on the Santiam Highway. An employee reported that two male suspects, one later identified as Bill Diaz, entered the business wearing ski masks and demanded money.

The employee reported that Bill Diaz was armed with a bat and the second suspect with a knife. The suspects were in the business for several minutes during which time the suspect who was armed with a knife ordered the employee to open the register.

During the robbery the suspect with the knife told the employee she would be shot if she did not comply. This suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register after which time he and Bill Diaz ran from the business. There was one patron in the business at the time of the robbery.

Albany Police Detectives have identified the second robbery suspect and anticipate making the arrest in the near future. Anyone with any information regarding this robbery is asked to contact Albany Police Detectives at (541) 917-7686.
