TILLAMOOK, Ore. - The man shot in what police call an attempted burglary in Garibaldi had Clark County ties, according to Oregon State Police.
Tillamook County District Attorney William Porter on Saturday authorized the release of the name of a man who died after being shot by Tillamook County sheriff deputies Friday afternoon in Garibaldi.
The man is identified as Michael Elmo Shepherd, age 68.
According to deputies, Shepherd has no known address and next of kin were located and notified with the help of a chaplain in Clark County, Wash. No photograph is available at this time.
The incident took place just after noon in this Oregon coast town, 84 miles west of Portland and just off of Oregon Coast Highway 101. Tillamook County Sheriff's deputies said they were called with information that a male was breaking into a motor home at 303 6th Street, Garibaldi.
Two deputies arrived on the scene and contacted the suspect, who reportedly approached them with a raised hatchet. Deputies said the suspect advanced and refused commands to stop. The suspect was shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputies involved are on paid administrative leave, which is common practice in officer involved shootings.
The investigation is being conducted by the Tillamook County Major Crimes Team, which consists of the Tillamook Co. Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, Tillamook Police Department, Rockaway Beach Police Department, Manzanita Department of Public Safety, and the Tillamook County District Attorney's Office.
